Media statement - April 22, 2024, 4:00 p.m. MDT

We have stood down our Yellowhead County incident emergency response and transitioned to the repair and restoration phase:

  • The investigation is ongoing and we continue to progress our activities with the regulators.
  • A comprehensive integrity assessment has been completed on nearby assets and normal operations have resumed. The system has been reconfigured to accommodate appropriate interim operational measures and is now optimized to maximize the system capacity, limiting impacts to customers.
  • The safety of people, communities and the environment continue to be our primary focus.

Media statement - April 19, 2024, 1:30 p.m. MDT

The safety of people, communities and the environment continue to be our primary focus as we respond to an incident on the NGTL natural gas pipeline system:

  • We continue to work closely with regulatory agencies and authorities to investigate the incident.
  • Our expert crews are progressing assessments and materials will be collected for analysis.
  • Out of an abundance of caution and in consultation with the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), we have reduced pressure on a segment of the NGTL system to support continued safe operations as the investigation progresses.
  • We are communicating directly with our customers about any impacts to service.
  • We are developing a repair plan and continue to evaluate timelines for a full return to service; we appreciate the continued patience of our customers during this time.
  • We thank the Yellowhead County community, Indigenous communities, landowners, local responders and involved agencies for their sustained support as we manage this incident response.

Update #4

Media statement - April 17, 2024, 3:45 p.m. MDT

We continue to respond to yesterday’s incident with a focus on the health and safety of responding personnel, surrounding communities and mitigating risk to the environment:

  • Once air monitoring is complete and a safe environment is confirmed, investigation activities will proceed and concurrently, survey crews and an environmental inspector will make observations and assessments to inform repair and restoration planning. We are committed to a thorough investigation.
  • Alberta Wildfire confirmed that the secondary fire is under control and does not pose a threat to any community. We are committed to continuing support for Alberta Wildfire in its response going forward as required.
  • We continue to work closely with regulatory agencies and authorities and will cooperate in their investigation of this incident. We also remain committed to keeping stakeholders and Indigenous communities apprised of our response.
  • At this time, we do not anticipate any service interruptions as we continue to respond to this incident. NGTL’s web-like pipeline structure provides many paths for gas transportation access, which allows for operational flexibility.

Alberta Wildfire has confirmed in an update at 7 p.m. (MDT) that the secondary fire is now being held. Please see its full statement here: Edson Area Update (alberta.ca). We are committed to supporting Alberta Wildfire in its response going forward. We appreciate the ongoing support of first responders.

We continue to work closely with regulatory agencies and authorities and will cooperate in an investigation of this incident.

Update #2

Media statement - April 16, 2024, 4:45 p.m. MDT

We can confirm a rupture occurred today on a segment of our NGTL natural gas pipeline system. This occurred in a remote location approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Edson, Alta in Yellowhead County.

The following information is an update on our active response:

  • We are working closely with first responders in the region, including RCMP, Yellowhead County and Alberta Wildfire.
  • An initial ignition of natural gas at the rupture site is now extinguished. We are working to support Alberta Wildfire in their response to contain a secondary fire.
  • We can confirm there were no injuries.
  • As previously shared, the affected section of the pipeline has been isolated and shut down.
  • The remainder of our system is operating normally and there are no commercial impacts at this time. We continue to communicate directly with our customers.
  • We are committed to continuing to keep stakeholders and Indigenous communities apprised of our response.
  • We are working closely with regulators and authorities and will cooperate in an investigation of this incident.
  • Our primary focus continues to be the health and safety of responding personnel, surrounding communities and mitigating risk to the environment.

Update #1

Media statement - April 16, 2024, 1:30 p.m. MDT

We can confirm that we are actively responding to an incident involving the NGTL natural gas system approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Edson, Alta in Yellowhead County.

TC Energy received notification about this incident at approximately 11 a.m. MT and immediately activated our emergency response procedures. We are coordinating with emergency first responders. The affected section of the pipeline has been isolated and shut down. There are no reported injuries. Our primary focus right now is the health and safety of responding personnel, surrounding communities and mitigating risk to the environment.  

We are making all appropriate notifications to regulators, customers, stakeholders and Indigenous communities.
